What are stressful activities for your back?

Exercising activities for your back are:

  • doing something in the same position for a long time
  • lifting and carrying heavy loads
  • bending a lot (sideways or far forward)
  • twisting of the upper body

The above activities strain your back, but certainly do not have to lead to overload. These activities can be performed without any problem if the muscles are sufficiently strong.

Back complaints and absenteeism

If the absenteeism lasts longer, other factors also start to play a role. “Will it still work?” and “how will they respond at work?” are often questions you ask. There can also be a kind of habituation to not working. It is cozy at home and you do not need so much anymore. These are normal processes that can occur during long-term absence. These benefits of not working can hinder the return to work, because nobody likes to lose something pleasant. Nevertheless, working is part of normal functioning and so you should take this step again.

  • Together with the company doctor or health and safety service:
  • check which tasks or parts of your work you think you can perform
  • draw up a resumption of work schedule, starting with the work that is feasible
  • you discuss a set-up schedule, in which the work gradually increases in load over time. This expansion is step by step, at fixed times and not on the basis of pain

Expansion of your activities is of course only possible if you yourself are also convinced that movement is harmless, despite the pain. You do not run any risk due to the construction of work and you can therefore just move.

Advantages of a build-up schedule:

  • your activities increase slowly and the pain subsides
  • there is now a lot of experience with these build-up schedules
  • with careful guidance there are good chances of success
  • there is clarity with you and your employer about what is expected of you and when
  • it appears that people with a good build-up schedule do their job completely again, than people without a build-up schedule

Prevention of back pain and absenteeism

Advice for back problems to prevent absenteeism:

  • Try not to move spasmodically People with back problems usually move spasmodically for fear of an increase in pain. Often people also avoid certain activities, which deteriorate muscle condition. This in turn leads to more spasmodic movement and an increase in pain. Before you know it, you are in a vicious circle that is difficult for you to get out yourself.
  • Do your normal activities as much as possible It is important that you carry out your normal activities as much as possible, despite the complaints. This does not involve any risk. By postponing heavy tasks and staying on the move as much as possible, the complaints quickly diminish. When complaints arise, you can intervene yourself and prevent the complaints from persisting for longer.
  • Try to eliminate the cause of stress Stress increases muscle tension and activity in the muscles. The consequences of this are:
    • the muscles have insufficient opportunity to settle
    • restore the condition of the muscles deteriorating
    • there is a greater risk of overload

It is important to recognize these signs in yourself and try to find a solution to the cause of stress. Then you can let the increased muscle tension disappear. By recognizing back complaints in time and dealing with them in the right way, you can prevent the worsening of complaints. This allows you to continue to perform your normal activities and the complaints will disappear faster.

If you are unsure about what to do best in your situation, it is wise to ask your general practitioner or doctor for advice. Especially if you are afraid to move around with your complaints and to stay active. Even if after about two weeks you do not notice an improvement in what you can do again, it is best to contact your general practitioner or doctor.
