Deviations from the nasal septum

Deviations from the nasal septum

What are abnormalities of the nasal partition?

Deviations from the nasal septum (septum deviation) are congenital or acquired abnormalities of position and shape of the septum septum, such as tilt, or thickening of the bone.
If the deviation impedes the passage of air through the nose, you may have complaints of one-sided or two-sided nasal congestion.

Symptoms abnormalities of the nasal septum

A deviation of the nasal septum is usually congenital. Complaints of a deviation of the nasal septum usually gradual.
If you have complaints of nasal congestion, following an injury to the nose, then that may indicate that the nasal septum has changed position due to the accident. The complaints are then: one-sided or two-sided nasal congestion.

How do abnormalities of the nasal bulkhead arise?

A deviation of the nasal septum is often a birth defect. Some tilt of the nasal septum is very common. A skew usually does not lead to complaints.
A deviation of the position of the nasal septum can also be the result of a nose injury, for example as a result of an accident or violence.

Is it serious and what can you expect?

Nasal congestion caused by a deviation of the nasal septum is not serious. Treatment is not always desirable or sensible. Research shows that in the longer term, the symptoms often subside automatically. In the event of serious symptoms, the temporary use of a nose drop may be considered.
The ‘real’ treatment, the treatment of the cause, is done surgically (septum correction or rhinoplasty). In a study of the effectiveness of this procedure in 105 patients, after 2 years 70% of the study population indicated that the symptoms were less. In another study involving 59 people, only a quarter of people were complaint-free after 9 years.

When to the doctor?

Visiting your doctor is useful to get certainty about what is going on with you. Only serious stand deviations from the nasal septum give complaints. It is good to exclude any other causes, such as allergy, hyper-reactivity or nasal polyps.
After a nasal trauma (injury) it is advisable to consult your doctor in case of nasal congestion complaints.

What can you do about it yourself?

With every complaint from the nose it is wise not to smoke.
